Despachos aren’t a fad. Knowledge of despachos has been passed on by the medicine masters of the high Andes Mountains, the descendents of the Incas, from one generation to the next via oral tradition for over 5,000 years. And for good reason… Of all the ancient healing secrets in South America, despachos are the superstars!

Sandy Breckenridge: Kerri, can you tell us a little bit about your background and what motivated you to make the leap from a womens’ health writer to the study of the Andean medicine masters in Peru and Alberto Villoldo?

Andean Medicine Masters Share Secrets for Manifestation

Kerri Colegrove: Sharing the despacho secrets of the Andean medicine masters is what I can do now to help the most people, and I love it!

Despachos are an easy and delightful way anyone can bring more of whatever they want into their life. Despachos are playful yet profoundly powerful and versatile too. You can use them to attract abundance and other blessings and also to accomplish some very serious healing – of physical conditions and emotional ones including emotional trauma.

The timing is absolutely ripe for despachos too, as interest in deliberate creation and energy medicines continues to swell. And introducing despachos with my new ebook, Feasts for The Gods, seems to be part of a mystery that’s been brewing inside me since early childhood when my love affair with Latin culture began.

My Grandfather lived near Mexicalli, one of California’s border towns. We visited him every winter when I was growing up and for me, the highlight of the trip was when my Father took me into Mexico and bought me the beautiful, hand-crafted dolls there, in pairs, male and female.

I was absolutely mesmerized by the mexican dolls magicalness and they’re reminiscent of the ones in the despacho kits I now make available on the Feasts for The Gods website. To this day I still adore Mexico and sneak little visits there whenever I can – to look for tiny dolls and other trinkets that I put in the despachos.

Early Education

My education is a good match with despachos too. Early on my Father also began teaching me what little Spanish he knew. Then when I entered the seventh grade he encouraged me to take Spanish and I did – all the way through college.

Later I had a lovely nanny from Acapulco who didn’t speak English and the necessity to converse with her in Spanish really secured my fluency, which is extremely handy on my research trips to South America. Also, majoring in history at a university with a strong emphasis on cultural history predisposed me to sensing the importance of writing about despachos. They do after all represent a rich facet of the cultural heritage of South America.

I never had the slightest desire to write about health matters back then though. After college I began writing advertising and eventually became creative director at an ad agency. I managed the staff of the creative department, the writers, designers and production personnel. It was exciting and fast-paced and kinda glamorous. We had a number of clients on the east coast and I loved the jet-setting and developing marketing plans and ad campaigns.

Motivation to Leave the Corporate World

Then one day I was sitting in a downtown high rise in a marketing meeting with some bank vice presidents, and they were moaning about how it was increasingly difficult to get new credit card customers because most people already had plenty of credit cards.

Then one of the VPs began chirping about how single moms were extra desirable credit card customers because many of them relied on credit to make ends meet, quickly maxing out their credit limits within the first year, then revolving – making interest only payments because that was all they could afford, which was extra profitable for the bank.

Next, I got the assignment to develop a special credit card promotion targeted at single moms.

That was a defining moment for me. I felt dirty, scheming to help this bank – a big one – take advantage of single moms. Increasingly I thought about what I could write that might make a more positive difference in people’s lives.

Women’s Health Newsletter Shares Insights on Energy Medicine

Soon the idea of a health newsletter got under my skin, one about women’s health since back then, in 1991, doctors were in many ways still making the mistake of treating women the same as men.

A good example of this was heart disease which is the leading cause of death for both genders. The medical community in general still didn’t recognize that it often presented differently in women than in men and as a result, many women were getting substandard care in this area.

Bingo! I’d found an important niche to fill – and decided I would become a journalist writing about women’s health! That’s how a newsletter I founded, Women’s Health Letter, was conceived and I became very passionate about it.

Next came the researching and writing. I started with more common topics, like diet and exercise and vitamins and herbs, educating myself as I went. Every year, it became increasingly challenging to find new topics to write about. And that’s what eventually led to the leap from Women’s Health Letter to despachos. It began slowly and naturally when I started writing about the energy medicines, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Larry Dossey’s Concepts for Treating Disease

In his book, Reinventing Medicine, Beyond Mind-Body to a New Era of Healing, best-selling author Larry Dossey, M.D., breaks the general evolution of health care into three phases.

The first, which he calls first generation medicine, is treating disease at the physical level, the body only. An example of this is taking an antibiotic to eliminate an infection.

The second phase he calls second generation medicine. It treats disease at the mental and physical levels and is commonly known as mind-body medicine. An example of this is having surgery to physically cut out cancer tissue, plus a mind treatment related to the physical condition, perhaps stress management therapy.

The third phase, which Dossey calls third generation medicine, treats disease at three levels, the levels of spirit (or energy) and mind and body. An example of this would be to add a spiritual or energy medicine treatment, such as prayer, to a mind-body treatment.

According to the extensive scientific research in Dossey’s book, this is where the most effective healing happens, with third generation or mind-body-spirit medicine.

Learning Energy Medicine with Alberto Villoldo, PhD

I began experiencing this myself. The more I wrote about energy medicines, the more I tried them, especially acupuncture which is one of the most well-known energy medicines.

Then I began studying energy medicine with Alberto Villoldo, PhD. He introduced me to despachos and the Q’ero, the last Incas and indigenous healers in the Andes Mountains where despachos originate and I discovered I really resonated with despachos.

They are a type of prayer offering, so they are an energy medicine – and a very unique and easy do-it-yourself one with much to offer everybody, since whatever your health status, a despacho will always enhance your well-being.

I might still be mainly a women’s health writer too in the sense that so far, females are showing the most interest in despachos! I think this is because healing is traditionally a female art that most women get involved with when they must care for the bumps, cuts and colds of their children and partners, plus their own routine health matters such as periods, pregnancy and menopause. We are the primary care providers for ourselves and our families. And despachos, well, they are an awesome addition to the repertoire of every home healer – immediately transporting you into the realms of extraordinary healing possibilities, with an assortment of modest items and no need for special training!

Despachos as SuperCharged Prayers

One way to think of despachos is as supercharged prayers.

Ordinary prayers are words that are spoken and have been scientifically proven to influence healing outcomes. Despachos however, employ a three-step technique to significantly increase the influence of prayers.

• Step One: Merging prayers with the physical – by blowing them into leaves.
• Step Two: Combining the leaves with symbolic material offerings that may include dried fruits, grains, legumes, candies and flowers. The offerings set the stage for an exchange, you give to receive.
• Step Three: Act of delivering these prayers and offerings to the universe, usually by burning them. Then, through quantum physics, the universe delivers back with blessings and/or healing that are specific responses to the prayers!

It sounds incredibly far-fetched. And it can be very challenging to accept this idea of supercharging prayers just by reading about it. Despachos are an experiential process however. When you make them you experience their effectiveness for yourself. Then you know despachos are a real phenomenon. And the more despachos you make, the more you experience this.

A good analogy for experiencing a despacho is the way we experience another type of energy, electricity. You can’t see it but you experience it when you flip a switch and a light comes on. Burning a despacho is akin to flipping a switch that supercharges prayer energy. Positive shifts, in the form of blessings and healing, start happening in your life!

Now might be a good time to also mention that with regard to despachos, the term prayer is used quite loosely. There is no religion or religious beliefs associated with despachos. You don’t even have to believe despachos work for them to work. Nor must you believe in prayer.

If you prefer you can blow wishes into the leaves and your despacho will work every bit as well. Despachos are an energy medicine so it’s all about working with energy, whether you call that energy a prayer or a wish or a nacho – it’s all about intention, what you ask for.

Sandy Breckenridge: Kerri, I can really sense in you a deep value to be of service. You are like a guiding light who has made choices in life to connect with your authentic self, thus finding a clear purpose to help others in magical ways. No wonder you had such a lovely synchronicity growing up in an environment that cultivated connection to the wisdom and culture of the Incas and Andean Medicine Healers.

Now for my next question. There is much discussion on the topic of the Mayan Calendar ending in 2012, which isn’t that far away. Did the Incas also align with similar prophecies? Can you tell me a little about your perspective on this topic and which of your despacho kits would be best suited to help a person align with their greatest potential during what I feel may be a collective consciousness shift in the most useful ways?

Evolution From Homo Sapiens to Homo Luminous

Kerri Colegrove: The Incas do have prophecies that are in alignment with the Mayans as well as the Hopis. And this is no coincidence because the ancestors of these cultures can be traced to a small group of visionaries who, over 30,000 years ago migrated from Europe across the Bearing Straights and into North America. From there they traveled south and their descendants stopped and settled at various points along the way. Some of these settlements eventually consolidated and flourished as the Mayan, Hopi and Inca cultures. And all three hold some common world views and prophecies, especially on the matter of 2012.

My understanding of 2012 is that the reason the Mayan calendar ends then is because it represents an end of one era of human history and the beginning of a new one; the evolution of homo sapien into homo luminous, or the enlightened human. The current explosion of interest and participation in various spiritual practices is actually helping us make this transition – because every authentic spiritual practice leads to the same place, enlightenment.

Becoming enlightened really is a process in which an individual becomes increasingly lighter spiritually, or energetically, until a whole new level of consciousness emerges. Perhaps you’ve heard the well-quoted Hopi saying, “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.” This hopi quote refers to this shift.

The Illusion of Fear Based Living

The shift happens as we heal. What we heal is what keeps us living in fear – fear-based living or the scarcity and competition mentality, the belief that there isn’t enough of everything for everybody and therefore we must compete against each other to get what we each need individually. This is an illusion.

As we each heal, this illusion gradually fades away. It is replaced by the realization that the world is a place of abundance and the more we cooperate with one another, the more we all have of what we need to survive and thrive, physically and emotionally and spiritually. This is love-based living or living from the heart, in our natural state of grace.

How do we make this transition from fear-based to love-based living? Simply by healing spiritually, on the energetic level, and there are many methods to achieve this healing including creating despachos. To get the greatest results with despachos, you really need to make them on a regular basis and make different ones. My ebook, Feasts for The Gods is an introduction to despachos and includes directions for making several different despachos that work together very well for making huge strides in spiritual healing.

Moving Toward Abundance and Prosperity

To do this, I recommend starting by making an Abundance Ayni Despacho.

If you aren’t sure what you need to heal, turn that uncertainty over to spirit by blowing into some leaves the prayer or wish to bring whatever healing you need most. (I once did this and quickly got help with an important matter I hadn’t known about!) Whatever improvements you’d like to see in your life, including material things like more money, blow wishes for those into qintu leaves.

Whatever dilemmas you might have, blow the prayer to heal and resolve those into leaves. If you have anger or resentments or conflicts, blow prayers and wishes to heal and release these into some qintu leaves too. This approach is guaranteed to stir things up, to get healing moving in the right direction. If it sounds complicated it’s actually quite simple. Release Any Negative Energy

Next, make the Protection Despacho.

This despacho works like a giant vacuum cleaner nozzle to suck general heavy energy (that others have directed at you such as anger, envy, jealousy and malicious gossip, even from ages ago) out of your energy field.

I made this one recently for a couple of gals. Afterward they both raved about how much lighter and happier they felt which just goes to show how much this type of energy can diminish us.

Healing and Creating Feminine and Masculine Balance

Next make the Despacho to Heal The Feminine and the Despacho to Heal The Masculine.

If you don’t think you need healing in these departments, put your doubts aside and make them anyway.

This is because the health of our feminine and masculine aspects are so essential to spiritual health that the only people I know who have perfect feminine and masculine balance are spiritual masters.

After making these despachos, don’t be surprised if old issues with your mother or father come up. That’s good. Revisit and work through them. The feminine despacho is also awesome for healing sexual trauma including that which occurs with incest and rape.

(If you have a partner, read below too my recommendation for your partner.)

Closing One Door Opens Another

Make the Death Despacho, too. Making the Death Despacho is a traditional way to honor the passing of life.

It’s also great for closing old chapters in our lives – such as old hurts, relationships, jobs and addictions – and it’s surprising how many of these are still open for many of us. Put prayers to heal and move on from these in this despacho. Closing these chapters is also crucial for realizing our greatest potential so this despacho is also about destiny and starting exciting new chapters in our lives.

Then follow up the Death Despacho by making another Abundance Ayni Despacho, and make your prayers and wishes about bringing more of what you want into your life. A Death Despacho followed by an Abundance Ayni Despacho is a powerful out-with-the-old-and-in-with-the-new despacho strategy. The Death Despacho as creates voids that the Abundance Ayni Despacho then fills with lots of goodies.

Healing is Like Peeling Layers off an Onion

Making these six despachos will change your life for the better forever. Then wing it… Make an Abundance Ayni Despacho (a great general purpose despacho) or another despacho once a month or so and you’ll continue your healing process since all spiritual healing is akin to peeling layers off an onion, so there’s usually more.

Ideally, what despacho we make next is determined by what issues are coming up in our lives. I get confirmation of what these issues are in my dreams. Somebody else might have strong feelings about a matter, or see signs in the world around them, or get extra input from others.

That said, if someone is looking to get the biggest bang with a single despacho, I’d recommend making the Despacho to Heal The Feminine or the Despacho to Heal The Masculine, whichever isn’t their gender. So a man would make the feminine one and a woman would make the masculine one.

Furthermore, if that person has an opposite gender partner, I strongly recommend the partner make an opposite gender despacho too. So a guy with a gal partner, she would make the masculine despacho. Same gender couples should make the same despacho. So a male couple would make the feminine despacho together. (More than one person can make the same despacho together as long as each person blows their prayers and wishes into their own leaves.)

The reasoning behind bringing partners into the picture with the above despachos is because the couple that grows together has better chances of staying together. And the shifts these despachos can bring about are so powerful, when both partners don’t make these despachos as recommended above, it can result in a couple no longer being a good energetic match and parting ways. I have seen this happen. I also suspect that many who make a feminine or masculine despacho will be so impressed with the level of healing they experience, they’ll make more despachos.

Putting Power Behind the Law of Attraction

One of the most exciting aspects of healing is that the more we heal, the more feedback we get via various forms of intuition.

Our intuition actually becomes sharper and clearer. The more we heal, the closer we also get to fulfilling our greatest potential. At some point it simply starts bubbling up from inside us, first in bits and spurts, then more consistently until eventually it becomes an unstoppable force. One aspect of this that might be of extra interest to readers is that the more this happens, the greater our ability becomes to manifest things we want using the Law of Attraction.

Lots of people are putting lots of effort into trying to attract and manifest this or that using the Law of Attraction only to get frustrated and disappointed when results aren’t forthcoming. Despachos can help with this because there’s a lot more to the attractor factor than just thinking and feeling positive about what you want. A simple energy blockage, something that needs to be healed, can undermine a person’s ability to manifest.

When you bring despachos into the picture however, they help heal and clear spiritual matters, energy blockages, thereby increasing a person’s ability to attract and manifest faster, especially as it relates to fulfilling their greatest potential. That is very exciting too. The more we heal, the more we are our authentic selves and in super sync, in the most positive and powerful ways, with the universe.

What follows is we are rewarded for exercising the courage it took to achieve this with, among other things, an increased ability to quickly attract and manifest what we want!

And this is really what the collective consciousness shift that is associated with 2012 is about – healing to increasingly step into our full power and greatest potential as individuals, plus as communities, nations, and peoples of the planet. Think of this shift as an evolutionary wave that is gaining momentum and mass right now and will continue to do so. It is a birthing of sorts, the entire human race is evolving and birthing itself anew!

Sandy Breckenridge: Amazing times indeed!

I love your detailed explanation of the 2012 prophecies and how we are moving toward a huge shift for humanity. Seems the more we enliven our lives the easier and profound the coming shift will embrace us as we embrace it.

The despachos seem like a very fun and magical way to facilitate this shift, so thank you for doing all the work to make them available. I also get a sense of the profound value of focusing attention to one’s intention through creating a despacho(s).

I gather when creating a despacho kit we are working with archetypes and symbolism (which holds a powerful collective wisdom or what Rupert Sheldrake would call a useful morphic field of consciousness) to facilitate change. And in doing so we are being “active” and “creative,” which is a vital step in the “Law of Attraction.”

In other words, we have to be willing to take an active part in our own transformation versus just putting thoughts out there with no active power behind them. We need to build a velocity of energy behind our intention and by using ancient Andean medicine rituals we provide powerful assistance to clear and open channels to potential and possibility.

I imagine each of the objects and elements you choose for the kits offers a combined synergy when the kit is assembled. Can you tell us a little bit about some of the items you incorporate into a despacho kit and the Andean history, or beliefs held about the various components?

Andean Shaman Symbolism and Archetypes

Kerri Colegrove: Sandy, you’re right, right and more right! With despachos we are working with archetypes and symbolism to facilitate change. So let’s do analyze the items that go into a basic despacho, an ayni despacho, such as the Abundance Ayni Despacho for which kits are available on the website.

It contains various items that together, create a whole universe.

To make the earth we use a seashell with female and male figures inside. This represents the earth in healthy masculine/feminine balance.

We also make the heavens using a white cottonball, a starfish and multi-colored yarn. The cotton represents clouds, which provide the water that is essential to life.

The starfish represents the stars in the heavens, and personal destiny, and the concept of as above so below.

And the multi-colored yarn represents the rainbow, which in Andean culture is symbolic of a rainbow bridge that connects the visible and invisible worlds and assists spiritual healing and transcendence. It is traditional to place this earth in the center of the despacho, then the heaven elements above.

These are the basics of a human universe.

Aspects of our Human Lives

The majority of the other items in the kit that go into this despacho represent important aspects of human lives, for example…

• Sugar is sweet and therefore symbolizes love, the sweetness of love.
• A dollar or other type of money is a measure of our success and therefore symbolizes success.
• Candy and the sharing of it is a way to foster good relations and therefore the candy symbolizes harmony with all our relations, family, friends, acquaintances, even our enemies including those upstream, in our future. So the candy helps make peace even before we encounter conflict.
• The small red beans symbolize places of emergence, where opportunities appear, such as a crack in the sidewalk through which a blade of grass emerges and grows.
• The animal crackers symbolize all the creatures of the earth, the animals, birds, fishes, reptiles and insects. We put the animal crackers in the despacho to honor and acknowledge them and their importance on the planet.

Now remember, when we make a despacho we are making an offering. This brings in the element of gratitude, thanking the universe for these aspects of our lives. So when we place these items into a despacho we are basically communicating, “we have these, here they are, thank you for them!” Then when we blow our prayers and wishes into leaves and put these into the despacho, we are saying, “this is what I would like more of!”

Healing the Feminine

Next, to this despacho we can add symbolic items to help us achieve even more specific goals. The Despacho to Heal The Feminine is an example of this. It includes all the items that are in the Abundance Ayni Despacho kit. To these are added a few symbolic items specific to feminine healing.

These items include a large pinkish/red flower which symbolizes a vagina or feminine power.

A picture of a white kitten or cat which symbolizes sexual purity.

Dried red rosebuds or red candies around the diameter of the despacho to create a “ruby necklace” to symbolize the onset of menstruation and the right to be a woman.

This is a real right and many cultures acknowledge this with female coming of age rites such as bat mitzvah ceremonies.

The last item, and this is a really amazing one, is a miniature place setting. It symbolizes making a place or space for one who is missing. Now, many modern day men are completely missing their inner feminine or anima on the energetic level. So when a man makes this despacho, the place setting actually facilitates the return of this missing part!

I have seen this happen and it is incredible, the energy body of the anima (and it is huge size-wise) actually returns and is reintegrated into that man’s energy body or spirit. When a woman makes this despacho, the place setting can facilitate a soul retrieval related to feminine healing. This would be the return and integration of a soul part (a piece of personal energy) that went missing or was “lost” as a result of sexual trauma, such as often occurs with rape or incest. When such missing parts return to us, a whole new level of healing and wholeness becomes possible.

Creating Your Own Despacho

All the despachos in my Feasts for the Gods ebook (with the exception of the Death Despacho and the Protection Despacho) use this “adding on” technique. So anyone who wants to make one of these other despachos can get the Abundance Ayni Despacho kit and add the few specialized items (that are listed in the directions for that despacho in my ebook) to make that specialized despacho.

I should add you don’t have to get the kit though it does make despacho-making easier. People love the kits too and rightly so, they are deluxe kits with beautiful white scallop shells and delightful hand-crafted miniature dolls for the female and male figures for example. That said, if someone wants to make the Abundance Ayni Despacho without buying the kit, they can download directions for this despacho for free from the website, gather all the items themselves, then use those to make their despacho.

Sandy: And how did you decide what items to use in each of your despachos?

Ancient Ayni Despacho Traditions of the Andean Medicine People

Kerri: First and foremost, the items in the Abundance Ayni Despacho, in my ebook, and the kits are based on the ancient ayni despacho traditions of the Andean medicine people.

I have slightly modified some of the items for purposes of practicality. For example, instead of using cleansing herbs from the Andes which aren’t readily available here, the directions in the ebook suggest lavender, rosemary or sage and the kits use lavender.

Still, the large majority of items in my ayni despacho are the same as those found in ayni despachos made in the Andes. So my Abundance Ayni Despacho is very authentic, and I know from experience, it works great.

The specialty despachos, such as the ones to heal the feminine and the masculine, those are my own creations, sorta. I knew enough about despachos and how they work that I knew I could add specialty items to an ayni despacho to focus the intention of that despacho for more specialized healing.

So, when I knew I wanted to create a despacho for feminine healing, I thought about what I knew about it, based on my own experience with myself and others.

I knew feminine healing required the restoration of female power, sexual purity, womanhood rites, and perhaps the return of the anima or one or more soul parts. Then I found items to symbolize these, a large pinkish/red flower, a picture of a white kitten or cat, a “ruby necklace,” and the miniature place setting. Then I simply added these to an ayni despacho and voila! It worked!

So this is a simple way to create a specialty despacho, add symbolic items to an ayni despacho. For those who might be interested in dabbling in this, I’ll mention there are some items to NEVER put in a despacho, specifically weapons (such as knives and guns) and locks.

Sandy: You mentioned working individually, and with a partner, but what about working in a group? Do you offer group visions and Despachos creating workshops? I would imagine a group of individuals supporting each others transformation would be all the more powerful. What a blast that would be!

Keri: Sandy, you are so insightful! Group despachos are lots of fun and very powerful. And there’s really no limit to how many people can make a despacho together. What seems most important is that everyone contributes something to the despacho.

Once I made a despacho with a group of nearly 100 and we made it outside on a sheet onto which we each put a handful of mixed grains and legumes along with pinecones we’d found earlier on the ground and into which we’d blown our intentions. Then one lucky fellow had the task of taking the sheet, with all the contents folded up in it, home to burn in his big outdoor fire pit. This is a good example of getting really creative with despachos.

When I make more traditional despachos for larger groups, I have everyone blow prayers and wishes into leaves and put these into the despacho. If the group is small enough, I also have everyone help put the various symbolic items into the despacho too. Anyone can make despachos these ways.
